1851-O $20.00 PCGS AU58 CAC

1851-O $20.00 PCGS AU58 CAC

Mintage: 141,000

A few years ago, I sold what I thought, at the time, was the best-looking AU58 1851-O double eagle in existence. That coin was a "super-slider" with fantastic rich original color, a razor sharp strike and the look of a Choice Uncirculated piece. This example may actually be every bit as nice; if not even nicer.

If you are even a casual student of New Orleans double eagles, you are probably aware of the fact that these coins almost always come with densely abraded surfaces. The present example is nearly free of marks and it is likely from the famous Baltimore Find; the source of the majority of the beautiful, high grade 1851-O and 1852-O double eagles that exist. The color is a rich light yellow-gold and the luster is nearly full with just a small amount of friction visible in the left obverse. This piece has never been cleaned or processed and it has a great natural appearance that would be hard to improve upon.

I have seen fewer high grade 1851-O double eagles than 1852-O and can't really understand why the latter issue has a higher Trends value than the former. Around a dozen or so true Uncirculated 1851-O double eagles are known and, if you can even find one, you are looking at an outlay of $35,000-40,000+.

1856-S $20.00 PCGS MS63 CAC

1856-S $20.00 PCGS MS63 CAC

Mintage: 1,189,750

While not indicated as such on the insert of the holder, my guess is that this coin is from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. It doesn't have the "look" that most of the coins from this source show, but the luster is just a tiny bit semi-matte in texture and the color, a medium orange-gold hue, is suggestive of some exposure to seawater.

Regardless of its origin, this coin has amazing detail, exceptional surfaces, and a really great look for an early date San Francisco Type One issue. There are just a few tiny scuffs in the fields that are hard to see with the naked eye.

The 1856-S is many, many times rarer in this grade than the 1857-S, and to find any date other than the 1857-S in MS63 (and with this appearance) is no easy task.
